(en) This paper focuses on the non-situational uses of Spanish neuter demonstratives. These forms have moved away from traditional proximal/distal features among others in virtue of their more abstract reference to propositions, rather than to nouns. The analysis of informal conversation, TV-debates and parliamentary debates, allows us to look beyond the more traditional research on demonstratives and deictics as part of narrative texts (whether spoken or written in origin) and to also focus on the differences between three interaction genres. Through a detailed analysis, I will show that esto and eso specialize differently. Indeed, whereas esto specializes in discursive deixis, eso operates in the realm of the expression of (inter)subjectivity.
