Abstract
We investigated the internal representations mediating face detection and face identity discrimination using a periodic visual stimulation approach with scalp electrophysiology (EEG). This technique offers objective, high signal-to-noise ratio, and efficient quantification of neural responses. On the one hand, our studies underline the importance of contrast polarity for face detection and the flexibility of the representation of unfamiliar face identities. On the other hand, we developed and validated a periodic oddball paradigm to efficiently isolate high-level differential perceptual responses. Overall, this work provides a promising new framework for exploring the neural mechanisms of human face perception.
