(en) This article presents a semiotic analysis of the visual dimension of CSR (corporate social responsibility) reports published by six French and Belgian firms that operate in the field of oil, gas and energy production. This approach considers images and visual structure of documents as an essential component of texts, which are semiotic devices that influence the sense production by social actors. The results of the analysis are a typology of visual images used in the reports, and the identification of a basic tension between “intensive” and extensive” dimensions. These results are a contribution to the understanding of the rhetoric of responsibility developed nowadays in corporate discourses.
