(en) Sensus fidei and sensus fidelium are often called upon to support this or that doctrinal position or change. How should this theological notion be understood? How can this "sense of the faithful" be discerned in Church life? Is it to be conflated with the opinion of the majority? What are the respective responsibilities of theologians and pastoral leaders towards it? A historical rereading of Christian tradition proposed here will shed some new light on the various aspects of the issue.
