- Corpora have led to a revolution in linguistics (cf. Rundell & Stock 1992). They have made it possible, among other things, to describe language more accurately, to bring to light its heterogeneous nature, and to approach aspects of it that had largely escaped linguists’ attention up to then (especially quantitatively). Interestingly, this revolution has affected all areas of linguistics, also more applied ones. In this presentation, I will focus on the use of corpora in the field of language learning and teaching (see, e.g., Aston et al. 2004 or Aijmer 2009). I will show how different types of corpora, including learner corpora, can be exploited to describe learner language or explain its characteristics, to improve syllabus design, materials development and language assessment, and even to make learners more active in their own learning process. Each of these possibilities will be illustrated through examples coming from the literature or from my own research.
