Abstract
The concept of criterion redundancy in MCDM has been sparsely addressed by previous research in the field, albeit being of inevitable interest in any practical application. This paper presents a new conflict-based framework for redundancy that is argued better suited for interactive approaches than the definition proposed by Gal and Leberling (1977). Redundancy in the continuous case is defined similarly to the definition of mutual preferential independence in multi attribute utility theory, a connection that brings additional insights to the conceptual problem of criterion selection. Finally a simple test for the linear case is described, intended for initial screening of models.
