- (en) Among the paratext, the frontispiece has gone through the most significant development during the modern era. From a simple space of inscription, it becomes, from the middle of sixteenth century, a space of figuration inspired by architectural and pictorial models. Put at the threshold of the book, it is also conducive to programmatic discourse. Thus, this gateway or pictorial preface to the text is deployed to instruct the reader about the content of the book, but also to lure the customer into buying it. However, beyond this commercial strategy, the frontispiece also plays the role of political, intellectual and artistic promotion – a role that this article aims to demonstrate through the often overlooked example of fortification treatises.
