Abstract
(en) Traditionally, a form of translation, a change of medium from literature to dance, is said to take place in ballet, but the latter one sometimes incorporates text and willingly distances itself from the source which inspired it. The distinction between verbal and body language is not always clear, when one recognises passages from the pretext on stage. Therefore, a ballet performance can be perceived as a hybrid object. Two literary ballets based on Goethe's Faust will be analysed and compared in order to address this boundary between dance and literature, namely Xin Peng Wang's Faust I - Gewissen!1 (Dortmund, 2016) and Edward Clug's Faust - Das Ballett (Zurich, 2018), which are both based on Faust I. As the ballet is no longer silent, it is questionable whether one would recognise Goethe's Faust in the medium if it were otherwise and how it is updated. The retained or added text can be interpreted by the literature researcher who can also use the programme to analyse the adaptation. The literary scholar has to find a different methodology and theory from that of dance studies to justify his or her intervention on this field because he or she may not master its tools. The terminology of the theory of allelopoietic transformation that can be applied to many different fields within humanities is relevant in this respect. It can be used to address both the old and new character of adaptations and to recognise their added value going beyond intertextuality in favor of a more dynamic approach that also takes into account a real interaction between art works.
