Sex, gender and gender relations are generally not considered central issues in Norbert Elias’s historical sociology. The sociologist however gave greater importance to gender relations and inequality than many of his contemporaries. For Elias’s readers, gender relations and their transformations in terms of power balance between sexes are falling under the theory of established–outsider relations (Elias & Scotson, 2008) and represent a rather crucial aspect of the civilising process(es). But gender relations and their transformations further refer in Elias to the emancipatory role of law and rights, to the transformations of sensitivities, and to the increasing trends towards both individualisation and integration of humanity. Starting not from gender studies but from a situated reading of Elias’s work, this article also suggests that re-exploring certain aspects of Elias’s life, like his relationship to women and to men, makes sense in order to better understand his sociology and its high topicality in the post-#MeToo context.
