- (en) In Western societies, the demographic aging is today a well-known phenomenon because of its major economic and social consequences, but paradoxically the social psychological contradictions of growing old in a society which holds negative beliefs and attitudes about old age are often neglected. On the basis of a double clinical and social approach, we examined the effects and the processes of age-related social stigmatization. First, two empirical studies were carried out to examine, on the one hand, the incidence of (negative) age-related stereotypes on older adults’ memory performance, on the other hand, the impact of real-life situations of social discrimination on their self-esteem and psychological well-being. Second, clinical research interviews were conducted in order to study the identity strategies used by the older adults to face age-related changes and ageism.
