Abstract
This paper presents the results of ongoing research into venereal diseases and the suppression of prostitution in the region that is now Belgium at the end of the 18th century. It is divided into two parts. In the first, I look at why, how and by whom prostitution was suppressed on Belgian territory at the end of the Ancien Regime. In the second, I look at the fates of prostitutes suffering from venereal diseases in such a repressive context. My goal is to show that, by the end of the 18th century, prostitution was being increasingly considered a medical problem.
