- Abstract
- (en) In Europe, two species of Impatiens are considered among the most invasive species: I. parviflora and I. glandulifera. Aside those species the genus Impatiens is also represented by a native species: I. noli-tangere. We used a comparative approach to assess differences among the three species. The invasive species had different reproductive strategies. The flowers of I. parviflora are self spontaneously pollinated. On the other hand, the flowers of I. glandulifera are visited by numerous pollinators. Most of them are Apidae that efficiently contributed to pollination. The native I. noli-tangere is also dependant from pollinators to ensure its reproduction. However this last one is visited by 40 time less pollinators than I. glandulifera. This difference is not due to nectar secretion or flower morphology. In consequence, both species may compete indirectly for pollinator services. On the contrary, I. parviflora and I. noli-tangere share a same habitat and may compete directly. Greenhouse experiments had shown that the native species is a weak competitor. This is due to its low vegetative development and its low reproductive success.
