Abstract
We present a scenario analysis supporting the implementation of a projected agricultural action plan for the area of the Brusselean aquifer, situated in the central part of Belgium. The proposed modified action plan is developed in terms of the constraints imposed by the EU Nitrate Directive. The aim of the scenario analysis was to generate a range of nitrogen leaching scenarios that can be integrated into a larger farm-scale N model, of both the actual and projected future agricultural practices. Simulations were performed to estimate the nitrate leaching from the agricultural root zone, using the 1 -D physically-based WAVE model. The simulations allow elucidation of the soil and climate specific impact of nitrate fertilization rate, application date and crop rotation type (in particular the presence of catch crops), on the amount of nitrate that potentially leaches to the subsoil.
