- Psalm 132 is not so much a prayer for a Davidic Messiah as one for Israel itself which appropriates the good deeds of David for its own so as to be able to lay claim to the benefits of Yahweh's covenant with his chosen one. The psalm begins with a midrashic elaboration of 2 Samuel 6-7, but continues in a manner closer to Jer 33:14-26. Psalm 132 is a postexilic composition which has been included among the 'Songs of Ascent' (Psalms 120-134) so as to give these a theological basis. The psalm's exaltation of David's virtues serves to reinforce the petitions addressed to Yahweh throughout the sequence. [Published abstract--Christopher T. Begg].]
