- (en) The strategic role of banana-plantain in the food security of the people of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS or CEMAC - in French) has for two decades been the subject of several development and research projects. This has led to the construction and the dissemination of various innovative farming techniques for this crop among the farmers in order to improve the viability of the sector. However, an evaluation of the majority of these projects reveals that the sector remains poor because of the low adoption and appropriation of these innovations. Given such poor innovation adoption rates, this thesis examines the determinants of the efficiency of family farming in the banana and plantain sectors. Using a translog production function, the results showed that that technical (area of the farm, combined effect of the use of chemicals and improved seed material), socio-economic (ethnics, education), investment and environmental factors influence the efficiency of banana-plantain producers. Using the probit model to predict the decision of the producer to adopt or not an innovation, the results show that the adoption of new varieties or innovations in plant propagation depend on socio-economic and environmental factors as well as the availability of extension services. However, the adoption of innovation related to the establishment of a banana and plantain plantations is not significantly influenced by any of the above factors. The dissertation describes a project that used a participative approach to evaluate banana and plantain varieties through a regional platform of dialogue and information exchange. The project showed improvement in the identification and the dissemination of new banana and plantain varieties among producers. It (the dissertation) describes the components of the project platform and the activities carried out showing the sustainability of the approach. Finally, the dissertation presents results on the adoption and the appropriation of innovations that were built and disseminated through regional platforms of dialogue and information exchange and compares those results with those achieved through conventional methods of creation, construction, or dissemination of innovation. These results support not only the expanded utilization of the platforms approach to innovation, but also the combination of several extension methods to improve the adoption and the appropriation of innovation on banana and plantain production in Cameroun as well as in West and Central Africa.
