In the framework of third generation mobile and personal communications systems attention has been paid to code division multiple access (CDMA). When this access scheme is used over frequency selective channels and several users are simultaneously active the transmitted signals experience inter symbol interference (ISI) and multiple access interference (MAI). This paper gives an overview of techniques making it possible to mitigate the effects of these two types of interference. The developments will be given for multitone CDMA which received much attention recently.
