Abstract
Direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is a multi-user transmission technique. If channel conditions as experienced by the receiver on one side of the link are known at the transmitter on the other side, the transmitter can predistort the signal in order to overcome the effect of the channel at the receiver. Transmitter optimization, in addition to receiver optimization, contributes significantly to efficient interference suppression in multiple-access and multi-path channels. The method presented rely on the knowledge about all user channels at the base station. The case of a single user system has been deeply studied by Scaglione, Giannakis and Barbarossa (see IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, vol. 47, no.7, p.1988-2006, 1999). Transmitter and receiver filter-bank pairs are designed according to the MMSE criterion under a constraint of intersymbol interference (ISI) suppression. The MMSE criterion is also applied under a transmitted power constraint. The present paper proposes a precoding technique for the complete elimination of both MAI and ISI in the uplink of a CDMA system based on burst transmission, with reduction of the MMSE joint detector to a simple filter matched to the total impulse responses. As degrees of freedom are still left at this stage additional objectives are introduced. It is further requested that the emitted power be minimized. The progressive solution and the close to optimum one introduced by Horlin and Vandendorpe (see Proc. IEEE -TCC'2001, Helsinki, Finland, June 2001) are compared to the optimal solution obtained at the output of an iterative algorithm. A system using a conventional set of binary codes jointly with a linear or DF MMSE joint detector is also envisaged for the comparison.
