- Abstract
- The concept of magnificence constitutes an essential component of the powerful means of communication favoured by political and religious ceremonies. Throughout the accounts of the events, close descriptions of the scenery, including enumerations of the endless abundance of ornaments and of the costly expenses of the devices, express the splendor of the magnificent transformation of the ordinary space and time into a ceremonial time and space. If magnificence legitimates the royal and civic power in a political context (e.g. Joyous Entries), the question raises to its functions, meanings or agencies in a religious context? How is magnificence related to piety, devotion and religiosity? This paper will approach these issues through the study of some examples of Jesuit spectacles in the Low Countries.
