Abstract
Environmental issues are the subject of an increasing appropriation by the public, primarily through media messages. In this context, the citizens’ ability to adopt a critical stance towards these messages has become crucial. This research aims to contribute to a better comprehension of appropriation of forest-related media messages by the public. Are the public more or less able to understand forest-related messages? Do they detect persuasion strategies and are they able to a critical judgment towards these messages? Can they more or less consider forests by articulating apparently opposing points of view, for example, by supporting both forest preservation and exploitation? More specifically, the research seeks to assess the individuals’ degree of cognitive autonomy towards forest-related media, and how it is influenced by various factors: their prior experience of forests, their theoretical training of forest and their forest preconceptions; their media practices and their media education level; and, finally, the type of media messages. We evaluate the cognitive autonomy of the public by asking a sample of young people to fill in a questionnaire requiring them to read and react to posters from different forest stakeholders. Some of them were interviewed in order to identify and understand the cognitive strategies that indicate signs of different levels of cognitive autonomy by the public.
