Abstract
The production of a manuscript was a complex process, usually involving an intricate web of persons in different roles, such as sponsor, lender of the antigraph, papermaker, copyist, corrector, miniaturist, bookbinder, helper and recipient. The colophons of Armenian manuscripts allow us to trace out the relationships between these individuals by offering ample information about their social status and their path in life. The patterns of occupational trajectories, social mobility and community structure that emerge from these colophons suggest that certain social positions were particularly associated with certain roles in the production process. At the same time, it is possible to identify networks of people from different strata of society gravitating around the same copying centre. Studying these aspects helps us gain a better understanding of the human factor in the circulation of texts and to map out the networks of communication (or absence thereof) between different intellectual centres.
