Presentation of my postdoctoral research project on the visual materials inserted in college notebooks from the Old University of Louvain. I discuss the nature and the role fulfilled by the printed and drawn representations in the notebooks. I highlight several aspects of this manipulation of images to stimulate imagination and memorization: the active role of students in designing, collecting and arranging visual materials in their manuscripts; the handling of printed images through cut and paste practice, application of color, association or juxtaposition with other images; and the importance of copying drawn sketches after prints.
