Discussion forums in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a valuable resource for instructors to help learners engage cognitively. Recognising the quality of learner cognitive engagement in MOOC forums, however, presents several challenges for MOOC instructors due to the plethora of messages. This study analyses the linguistic features of MOOC forum messages to identfy the quality of leaner cognitive processes. Quality is measured through a learning taxonomy that portrays the level of linguistic complexity and the organisation of thoughts in MOOC forum messages. This approach can better inform MOOC instructors about the quality of cognitive engagement that learners display in MOOC discussion forums.
