Bariatric surgery is effective in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In our work, we show that bariatric surgery alters muscle expression and circulating levels of several myokines. Changes in some of these myokines are associated with changes in glucose homeostasis and muscle mass after bariatric surgery. In addition, we have developed a primary human muscle cell culture model that allows the study of changes in myokine expression in muscle cells. Using this model, we have shown that the expression of myokines capable of improving glucose homeostasis is altered in muscle cells after bariatric surgery. Finally, we identified myostatin as a potential biomarker of muscle mass and sarcopenic obesity in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery. Taken together, our data suggest that some myokines may play a role in improved glucose homeostasis and changes in muscle mass after bariatric surgery, and may serve as biomarkers of muscle mass in people with obesity.
