Scaling up of autotropic microalgae production is much more challenging than that of fermentation processes. Firstly industrial Photobioreactors, either used to provide algae seed culture or for full scale production, are still not as conveniently available as in the case of fermentors. Secondly, microalgae grow autotrophically much slower than yeast or bacteria. Thirdly, the growth conditions of large scale outdoor microalgal cultivation can not be sufficiently controlled. In practise, scaling up of microalgae production is more or less trial and error process. This talk will try to summarize and evaluate the general procedures and principles of scaling up microalgae production, based on theory and practise and using scaling up of Haematococcus production as a case study.
