Abstract
In 2017, the Brussels-Capital Region adopted a five-year Health Promotion Plan, that supports programmes mainly implemented by non-profit organizations. This Plan encourages the use of realist evaluation, a research approach aimed at better understanding how and why interventions produce outcomes, that are shaped by the context. While this approach is promising, its implementation remains complex, especially for small organizations whose actions and evaluations are embedded in participatory and empowering practices. Through a review of the literature and the experimentation of realist evaluation with several teams of health promotion practitioners, this thesis explores some of the questions and controversies raised by its use in the field of health promotion. The findings highlight perspectives for developing appropriate realist evaluation practices, considering the possibilities and issues encountered in the field.
