- (en) The thesis is the following one; there are two aims of architectural production, which are two opposite, but compatible, ways of producing habitat under an extra-artistic situation. Such quotation implies the construction of a theory of architecture grounded on the explanatory model of human behaviour offered by the mediationist theory. It then claims an explanation of the alternative between realism and formalism as well as an explanation on what opposes them. Finally it needs the testimony of historically proven realistic and formalistic productions. In a mediationist framework, architecture can be defined without ambiguity as the production of habitat. Accordingly, architecture can be understood as the rational moment when the contradiction between forms (types, elements, positions) and the habitat’s things (function, inhabitants, material, and constructor) are outdated. Three manners of shaping the habitat are thenceforth possible: realism, formalism, aesthetism. If the aesthetic aim tries, no matter what, to render the habitat adequate to itself, the two other aims leave the choice open: either in a realist way by acting on the forms in order to make them adequate to things, either in a formalist way by acting on things in order to make them adequate to shapes. This alternative can be historically proven by noting that modern architects have promoted and adopted a realistic aim while post-modern architects chose a formalistic one. By prioritising a realistic aim modern architects have indeed formalised things and by doing so they have adjusted habitat to circumstances. Postmodern architects when choosing for formalism instead have reified shapes. They have thus imposed the structuration and ambiguity of habitat’s shapes. However, the formalistic and realistic architectural aims are both leaning on a same artistic reasoning; their alternative is inherent to architecture. The perpetual question of the precedence between shapes or things occurs with every habitat production and finds its answer in the very movement of this production. It allows therewith two solutions equal in right and compatible.
