The aim of my project was to study the impact of urgency on human behavior. In Chapter 1, I concentrated on global adaptations of behavior to diverse urgency contexts. First, we investigated the existence of a common mechanism, which inherently invigorates decision and movement speed within high-urgency scenarios. In this work, we also tested the hypothesis that this default control mode can be overshadowed by other processes depending on task demands, sometimes leading to a dissociation of decision and movement speed, as reported in past studies. In Chapter 2, the focus shifted to behavioral adjustments on a trial-by-trial basis to determine if post-error adjustments are influenced by the urgency context. In summary, our results unveil a nuanced interplay of various mechanisms influencing decision making and movement execution. Despite their disparate operating levels, all these mechanisms align towards a singular objective: optimizing the rate of reward within a given context.
