- This paper examines two stories in 2 Samuel where a character tells David a fictional story to get him to pronounce himself about episodes of his life: the “parable” of Nathan (2 S 12,1-7) and the meeting with the woman of Tekoa (2 S 14,1-21). It highlights the function of the encrypted story at the two levels constituting any narrative: the intradiegetic plan which concerns the trick scenes and what is happening between the characters; and the extradiegetic plan which concerns the way in which the narrative directs the reader into its world through its narrative strategy and the various elements that are provided therefore.
