Abstract
(en) This paper aims to shed light on a still very little-known French manuscript from the Vatican Library collections. Through an analysis that takes into account both codicological and textual evidence, manuscript Reg. lat. 866 is shown to be the draft of an anonymous and otherwise unknown work. The Franc cyon de noblesse deals with the geography of France and genealogy of European royal houses, in order to demonstrate the greater nobility and antiquity of the kings of France. Written during Francis I’s reign, it was most likely meant to be printed and used for the education of the king’s eldest son, Francis III, duke of Brittany (1518-1536). The project was seemingly brought to an early end. The paper furthermore discusses a hypothetical authorship of the Franc cyon.
