- My contribution aims at exploring Syrians’ memories through an infra-regional mobility: in Morocco. Following the different waves of Syrian migration to Morocco (1960s, 1980s and from 2011) I plan to observe how migrants’ memories might play a key role in the reconfiguration of homeland political cleavages (Lipset S.M. e Rokkan S. 1967) and how a sense of fear and violence can be reproduced in a dimension of mobility. From Syrians’ personal past experiences, I am interested in those mnemonic practices (Olich & Robins 1998), those behaviors that help to understand the plural meanings of “past” in present time of everyday life (Bono 2016). In particular, this contribution questions memory practices in a double dimension: on the one hand, it explorers the heterogeneous past experiences of the Syrian regime that are not necessarily translated into national narratives. On the other hand, it presents Syrian migrants’ interactions in ordinary life in Morocco which can support the observation of what remains after the displacement and what is reproduced in a hosting environment. In particular, the space of everyday life in Morocco has shown how in such a situation of Syrian civil war, the cleavages observed have prevented the creation of spaces for participation and association in the host context, generating processes of refusal, hostility and fear between the first flows of the diaspora and the new Syrian refugees. The ongoing ethnographic research draws on a collection of oral histories on the everyday lives of Syrian migrants in Morocco and it aims at questioning a sense of continuity between past and present, how Syrian political interactions are able to “remake the Nation” (Rigney 2018) and influence the way Syrians construct their subjectivities in Morocco.
