Abstract
We introduce the basic variables for tackling the mass budget of every constituent of a fluid mixture. Then, taking into account advection, molecular diffusion and reactions, we establish the conservation equation governing the constituent concentrations. We describe the space and time variability of processes taking place in estuaries, coastal regions and shelf seas, allowing us to derive the suitably-averaged reactive transport equation under the Boussinesq approximation. Some of the properties of its solutions of it are discussed. We briefly approach the related numerical aspects and give a few examples of application. Finally, we provide pieces of information about sediment dynamics, wetting and drying, and diagnostic methods.
