The feeling of existence is a key notion in Maine de Biran's anthropology. In the perspective of a systematic study of the notion in the evolution of Biran's works, this article evokes some aspects of the problem: the specific role of reverie in the knowledge of the self, the Rousseauist origins of the notion, the basis and the content of the feeling of existence in Biran, the limits of knowledge by feeling. Finally, we evoke the evolution of the conception of the feeling of existence into the feeling or the idea of effort.
