Abstract
MSCs are considered as an ideal cell source for the development of liver regenerative medicine, which aims at bringing innovative therapeutic solutions to patients in need. Their use as second-generation cell therapy products, designed to overcome the limitations of mature hepatocytes, has been supported by the interesting features of these cells, including self-renewal potential, plasticity, and immunomodulation. The technological advances related to cell transplantation, a better understanding of the MSCs' behavior adaptability to extracellular environments, and their powerful secretion machinery of bioactive molecules and particles that promote tissue repair and regeneration, have logically prompted the clinical development of MSCs. Indeed, the safety and feasibility of MSC-based therapies have been demonstrated in clinical trials for different hepatic and nonhepatic diseases, and efficacy studies are ongoing. This chapter will critically review and discuss the mechanisms of action that have been characterized to support the use of this type of stem cells for the treatment of liver diseases.
