Abstract
Despite the widespread use and understanding of key concepts like cultural district, creative cluster and artistic neighbourhood (SCAENA, 2023) by work considering the challenges and opportunities of creative cities and their major constituant (meaning the Big- C culture), management research has fallen behind by not inquiring the strategic potential of Big-C culture for organizations inter alia following their choice of location. Indeed, the contribution of past research in management is mainly showing how (high-)technological agglomerations can foster innovation of organizations like the Silicon-Valley (Delgado, Porter, & Stern, 2014), but extended research paid little attention to other types of agglomeration. Yet, Big-C culture could foster innovation of organizations by ripple effects – among others thanks to its educative potential, inspiring novelty-driven working routines and creative pool of workers (Policy Research Group, 2013; Khlystova, Kalyuzhnova, & Belitski, 2022). However, we miss a clear understanding of whether and how organizations can strategically benefit from Big-C culture through their location into a city offering a particular cultural vibrancy. This exploratory research innovatively joins Big-C culture and strategy, whose the intersection in scientific literature still appears much too thin (Gibbons, Siegel, & Weber, 2021). Concretely, we determine the existence and magnitude of causality relationship between the cultural vibrancy (meaning the urban cultural offer) and the innovative ground (meaning the innovation capacity of organizations) across European creative cities. Most data have already been collected – among others from Eurostat, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor. Firstly, ordinary least squares (OLS) is conducted. Secondly, fixed effects models are constructed.
