Chapter 1, specifically emphasized, delves into Respiratory Muscle Assessment and Training. It highlights the importance of addressing respiratory muscle weakness, a common issue in chronic respiratory diseases, and the potential of inspiratory muscle training to improve health conditions. The thesis conducted systematic reviews on IMT for persons with lung cancer after surgery and heart failure, aiming to optimize training parameters. To ensure reliable monitoring of IMT, the between-session reliability of MIP measurement in COPD patients was investigated, resulting the good reliability in the measurement. Recognizing the lack of local data, a study established predictive values for maximal inspiratory, expiratory, and sniff nasal inspiratory pressure in the Vietnamese population. Furthermore, to overcome resource limitations, the thesis explored the Borg CR10 scale as an alternative for monitoring IMT intensity and estimating MIP, showing encouraging results for healthy subjects, thereby enhancing accessibility to IMT in resource-constrained environments. The 1-minute sit-to-stand test was also validated for use in heart failure patients, accounting for the learning effect. Furthermore, cultural adaptations for questionnaires were addressed through the cross-cultural validation of the Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory and the Nijmegen Questionnaire in Vietnamese.
