This monograph examines the social and settlement organisation of non-urban communities in the central Apennines during the pre-Roman period. Long interpreted as marginal due to the absence of urban centres, these societies are analysed through the combined use of landscape archaeology, GIS-based spatial modelling, and archaeological evidence. The study demonstrates that Apennine communities developed rational and adaptive forms of territorial organisation closely aligned with local environmental conditions. By challenging urban-centric and teleological models, the monograph proposes an alternative framework for understanding non-urban pathways to social complexity in pre-Roman Italy.
