- Successful alignment of actors’ goals is crucial for effective problem-solving in collaborative networks which involves actors with diverging views and interests. Resulting from a collective learning process in which social dynamic have a key role, it ensures actors long-term commitment even in the absence of consensus on the problem definition. Yet, our understanding about the role of social interactions in goal alignment remains limited. Adopting an individual level approach, this paper take stock of this gap and explore the social factors that explain individual perceptions of goal alignment. It looks at the influence of knowledge acquisition, bonding ties and actor voice using data of eight Belgian collaborative networks composed of 10 to 20 individuals who were both surveyed and interviewed about their participation. Using clustered robust linear regression, results show that bonding tie and voice – defined as the extent to which actors ideas are taken into account – positively influence individual perception of goal alignment. Those results highlight the importance of strong and inclusive social relations for goal alignment and, hence, collaborative long-term success.
