Abstract
(en) This contribution explores the complex articulations between Marxism-Leninism and Islam, moving beyond the thesis of their hermetic opposition or simple political instrumentalization. The research brings into conversation two distinct source materials: on the one hand, a literary analysis of the novel Warda (2002) by Egyptian writer Sonallah Ibrahim, which depicts the eponymous heroine's engagement in the Dhofar Rebellion (Oman, 1965–1976); on the other hand, ethnographic fieldwork (life histories and structural content analysis) conducted among contemporary Marxist activists of Muslim faith in Belgium. By approaching Marxism and Islam as two 'discursive traditions' in the sense of Talal Asad, the study highlights the material and dialectical reinterpretation of theological concepts (such as sabab and mektoub). Finally, the article examines how these two horizons converge into an 'active hope,' transforming messianism and the quest for earthly justice into powerful forces of protest against structures of oppression.
