Ideal workers are primarily characterized by their availability, connectivity, flexibility and entrepreneurial behaviour. These features align with New Ways of Working (NWW), which combine spatio-temporal flexibility, empowerment and collaboration practices. Therefore, NWW are presumed to contribute to shaping the ideal worker. However, the processes through which NWW contribute to the emergence of this ideal remain largely unexplored. Based on a case study carried out in a multinational insurance company through 78 semi-structured interviews, this article identifies the re-regulation of worker’s visibility as the driving engine behind the making of the ideal worker. We propose an original, dynamic and non-sequential articulation of regulation, self-regulation and re-regulation, to explain how the social production of the ideal worker unfolds.
