Abstract
(en) Technoscience represents a form of rationality in which the endeavours of reason are prominently reflected, given the scope of its accomplishments and its impact on societies and cultures. This prevalence of an excess of rationalism- which tends to impose itself as a paradigmatic form of rationality and action- tends however to close upon itself, its aim being merely an indefinite extension of its knowledge and capabilities. The hybris which is its characteristic may be interpreted as a “Eugénie’s temptation” – the title of Pierre Giorgini’s latest (2018) work-, which refers to an attempt at complete mastery of the evolution of complex systems regarding geosphere, biosphere and sociosphere, enabling humanity to determine the shape of the world to come in its various aspects. At that point, it becomes necessary to think about the scientific and technical development in its process of autonomy and of separation from the spheres of ethics and meaning. Interpreting the future of reason may shed light on this issue and give basis to the kind of hope which sustains the historic future of reason. What is the object of this hope? The work of Belgian philosopher Jean Ladrière (1921-2007) provides elements for a Christian comprehension of the future of reason which opens up on to a new horizon and an unexpected “destiny”.
