(en) Fast (EDL) and slow (SOL) mice (C57) muscles were treated in vitro with nitro-L-arginine 10 mM, an inhibitor of NO synthase. The maximum isometric force did not change, but the maximum velocity of unloaded contraction decreased by 27%. We conclude that NO is able to modulate the maximum velocity of contraction.
