Abstract
The apertures, exine ornamentation and stratification of the pollen of four species of Mucuna, M. sloanei, M. biplicata, M. sempervirens and M. rostrata have been studied. The species were selected to represent of the macromorphology and geographical distribution in the subgenus Mucuna. The pollen is tricolporate in all the species. The exine is reticulate in M. sloanei, M. biplicata and M. sempervirens, the lumina smaller on the poles and becoming progressively larger towards the mesocolpium. M. rostrata has verrucate exine ornamentation. The infratectum is composed of orientated granules in the pollen of M. sloanei, M. biplicata and M. rostrata. M. biplicata has pollen very similar to M. sloanei. The exine is finely reticulate in M. sempervirens and the infratectum consists of short columellae. The study shows that both columellar and oriented granular infratectum may occur in the subgenus Mucuna. The columellar infratectum is not confined to species of subgenus Stizolobium as had been thought. The parallels between the pollen of Mucuna and Vigna are briefly discussed.
