Eine konstruktionelle Untersuchung deutscher Motion-Konstruktionen mit Partikelverben und deren Alternativen mit Präpositionalphrasen – DURCH-, EIN und WEG-Konstruktionen in Vergleich
The aim of this PhD dissertation is to study three realizations of German motion constructions with particle verbs featuring durch-, ein- and weg- and their alternatives with prepositional phrases within the frameworks of Construction Grammar (CxG, Goldberg 1995, 2006) and Talmy’s linguistic typology (Talmy 1985, 2000). In this dissertation we describe possible extensions of Goldberg's and Talmy’s models for German constructions and we illustrate the specificities and constraints of the German durch-, ein- und weg- constructions. In the empirical part we give an overview of the typical constructions and lexicalisation patterns in German. The data consist of a list of instances of the constructions with the particles durch-, ein- and weg- and their alternatives with prepositional phrases collected in the German newspaper corpora of the IDS Mannheim and other newspapers. This dissertation focuses on the mapping/the interaction between the arguments of the constructions (subject, object, argument oblique) and between the verb classes and the constructions. The analysis describes similarities and differences between and within the durch-, ein- and weg-constructions and provides insights in the use of these constructions. The results show that some verbs occur in the three constructions whereas others are not attested in all the instances. These differences can partly be explained by the semantics of the verbs and the speakers’ world knowledge. The analysis also shows that the durch-, ein- and weg-constructions differ in the nature and interaction of the arguments as well as in the motion expressed by the construction, i.e. actual or metaphorical motion.
