The analysis has notably allowed to document the particular demographic pattern generated by the Charleroi industrial basin in the pre-transitional period as well as the brutality with which the decline of fertility is triggered in this dwelling environment around 1873-1876. The second part of this research, achieved through the reconstitution of the reproductive stories of more that 2000 families, studies in detail this transition of fertility patterns in this industrial habitat. Voluntary birth control would be, at first, a response to a context of socio-economic crisis which jeopardized the standard of living of the families and which might have altered radically the role of the child in the household economy. Within the Walloon manufacturing environment, the decisive impulsion to the decline of fertility would thus have been give by the major economic depression of years 1873-1892.
