(en) Selective mutism of the child constitutes a symptom that is not pathognomonic of a precise psychological structure. It appears in different forms. Isolated, mutism can affect the child for years before a first consultation, as the family accommodates and integrates this inhibition in their functioning. The article is constructed around two main axes: how to understand and how to treat mutism. At this stage, the author develops a reflection on the different possible meanings of the symptom as well as its varying functions. In fact, from an etiopathogenic viewpoint, mutism is usually considered through the family system’s quality of interaction and its functioning when this happens not to be a traumatic event kept secret. Moreover, aspects to do with therapeutic accompaniement are broached on that show the relevance of multimodal intervention which takes into account various approaches and paradigms.
