Abstract
(en) Although he was likened to an evangelist, Matthew was subject to many hesitations as to his field of evangelization and his resting place. Salerno and Saint-Pol-de-Léon claimed to have relics, but where did they come from? Tradition refers to Ethiopia, a geographical designation under which Colchis is probably to be understood. However, older texts evoke other locations: the land of the Parthians and Persia. The first hagiographical traditions keep thus the memory of a vaguely delimited Caucasian location.
