The objective of this paper is to reflect on the concept of reciprocal impulsion (RI) on the basis of an empirical work conducted in recently born social and solidarity economy (SSE) organisations active in the social and environmental field (in the Ile de France region). We will develop the idea that gender shapes RI at different levels : the one of individual’s motivations to act on one side, the one of the (monetary and non monetary) means that are mobilised on the other side. On this basis, we are questionning some of the statements present in the SSE economy where RI is associated with altruism, particularly in organisations where women are the initiators. Our field work shows that women’s socio-economical practices are challenging in that respect.
