- The gap in labour force participation between men and women has puzzled researchers for several decades, especially since women have outnumbered men in tertiary education in developed countries. Italy is a country characterised by very low female labour force participation (FLFP). This is also a feature of other countries in southern Europe, such as Spain and Greece. However, even within this group, Italy remains at the bottom. In this paper we will illustrate the Italian case with reference to the theory developed by Goldin - the horizon, the identity and the decision-making in women's work. In addition to these factors, we will pay particular attention to the Italian welfare regime within which women's work decisions are made. We will also take into account recent developments in family policy, as the Italian government has produced several plans and legislative proposals in recent years. We will conclude with recommendations for future strategies to increase the participation of Italian women in the labour market.
