Abstract
(en) Introduction In recent years, the concepts of diversity-responsive healthcare provision at provider, organizational and policy levels were defined and operationalized for European contexts (Seeleman 2009, 2014; Dauvrin 2012). The next step is to implement these in European healthcare. However, the need for priority-setting is enhanced by the economic crisis. Objectives This workshop aims at defining priorities for implementation of diversity-responsive public health and healthcare in times of austerity. Methodology I. The first part consists of brief presentations on the structure, process and outcomes of diversity-responsive care: current state of the art and empirical studies (45 minutes). Structure: What needs to be done at provider, organizational and policy level to provide diversity-responsive care? Process: Improving the health reception of newly arrived immigrants. This study demonstrates the knowledge of the Danish healthcare system and healthcare-seeking behaviour among newly-arrived immigrants in Denmark. The introductory programme for newly-arrived immigrants may be an obvious setting to improve access to healthcare (http://sulim.ku.dk/research/wp6/) Outcome: Ethnic inequalities in patient safety in Dutch hospital care? (Van Rosse 2013; 2014) The results of this study suggest that non-Western ethnic minority patients are not at increased risk of adverse healthcare events, despite massive evidence for problems in the process of care (due to e.g. language barriers). What are the implications for the quality of diversity-responsive care? II. The second part consists of a structured discussion of the organizers with the audience (45 minutes ). Given the above as the current state of affairs, what are the next steps that need to be taken; in research, practice and policy? And which steps deserve priority, taking budget constraints into account? Discussion leaders: Karien Stronks and Allan Krasnik The workshop is designed for 20–30 participants Expected results Contributions to the agendas for research, practice and policy regarding implementation of diversity-responsive care in Europe.
