(en) In agriculture as in other economical sectors, the internationalization of trade exchanges and the application of national or international agricultural policies leaded to a need for accurate and up-to-date estimations and forecasts of acreage and yield. These are of first importance for minimizing the costs of transports and transformations. Agribusiness markets and public institutions also consider early monitoring Systems as essential tools for the définition of their strategies and policies. During many years, compiled national statistics constituted the prime source of information. Many current monitoring Systems are still based on non-digital and nongeographical information Systems. In some sugar refineries for instance, crop acreage are estimated thanks to the amount of sugar beet seeds sold at a régional level. some cattle food factories détermine the amount of food to be produced according to information provided by local agricultural newspapers and by the USDA reports. These data fulfill partly the information needs (Pacheco, 1992).
